After visting Avignon inlcuding the Palace of the Popes, the city walls, the River Rhone, you'll know almost everything about the Popes' and cardinals' life in the Middle Ages. There's indeed a lot to discover in this very unique city that knew a very particular destiny in the 14th C when the popes took shelter in Provence moving from Italy to the South of France.
You'll continue your trip through the Middle Ages, visiting a couple of villages in the spectacular norhern Luberon. Depending on the season you might hit the villages of Gordes perched on the Mountains of Vaucluse and Roussillon built on ochre cliffs or if you prefer to stay away from the crowds, your guide will take you to more intimate but as beautiful and interesting places. Besides the villages, the landsacpe in Luberon is breathtaking, combining vineyards, olive tree orchards, lavender fields (in bloom in June, July), oak tree and cedar forests and limestone formation.
