These 2 cities are very close to each other but totally different from each other. The coastal town of Marseille is a spectacular place and a bustling city, second largest city in France and one of the oldest.
The Greeks from Phocée have founded the city in 600 BC followed by the Romans. Not many Greek and Roman remains lefting but a very rich and old history that you discover touring the city. You'll enjoy spectacular views of the Old and new ports from the MUCEM Museum new landmark in Marseille, and from the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, highest point in Marseille.
A few kilometers inland, Aix-en-Provence is quieter and is more classical than Marseille. Former Capital of Provence, the city has kept features of its brilliant past such as the majestic Avenue of Cours Mirabeau, the Mazarin district and many other sections of the city where noble houses can be seen built in the 17th and 18th centuries.
All over you'll be charmed by old fountains standing against a wall or highliting a facade or a square.
