On your next trip to Aix, you will discover the new face of a strategic section of the city of Aix.
The project of restauration of the 3 large squares of Aix-en-Provence is ending and very soon – in April 2019 – we will have the opportunity to admire the biggest square of the city connecting the Madeleine, Precheurs and Verdun squares and creating a beautiful and unique spatial unity. The market will move back to the historical site which will be great after being 2 years around the Rotonde Fountain, on the Cours Mirabeau and Cours Sextius.
A temporary garden
Beforehand, an interesting happening will be completed: the construction of a temporary garden designed by Antoine Dubray and Simon Melling to celebrate the revival of the squares. Besides colorful trees and spring flowers there will be wicker sculptures built by the artits Keren Gossart and Corentin Laval.
In addition, you will see wooden pergolas that can be used as temporary shelters during the wintertime and will be the theatre of different events.
Nearby the restauration of the Madeleine church have started and will last 12 months.
A Picasso Museum within 3 years
In the same area, within 3 years the former Dominican convent built in the 13th C should be converted into a Museum displaying more than 2000 works of Picasso owned by Caherine Hutin, Picasso’s stepdaughter, who has wonderful collection of the painter.
This will make the former Capital of Provence even more appealing and should attract between 450 000 et 500 000 visitors a year.
It’s time to book your private tour of Aix-en-Provence, walking tour, full day trip excursion or even your stay in Provence in order to discover the new facet of the city.
