PERCHED VILLAGES IN LUBERON
Everywhere in Provence you will be charmed by quaint villlages so very often perched on rocky outcrops, which were inherited from the Ligurians and rebuilt in the early Middle Ages due to the different waves of invasions that surged through the country after the Romans.
The Luberon mountain range, stretching over 60 kilometers from Cavaillon to Villeneuve – 37 Miles -, offers a combination of sumptuous countryside and beautiful stone architecture.
Quiet countryside with lavender fields and the cherry tree groves contrasting with the impressive high cliffs and rough plateaus are dominated by the medieval hilltop villages.
It was here that the first religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants arose in the 16th century, giving the Luberon region an interesting historical character. The village’s rich history is still visible in the architecture of its buildings.
The peaceful Lourmarin will entice you with its Renaissance castle, its Protestant church and quiet streets containing small stores and art galleries. The hilltop Bonnieux is like a sentinel watching over the Calavon Valley and the Cedar forest on the top of Petit Luberon. The famous village of Gordes rated as the most beautiful village in the world by an American jornalist is not to miss as many other places.
The mysterious Lacoste with the haunting ruins of the castle of the Marquis de Sade invites you to contemplate the wonderful countryside.
All these villages offer enchanting architectural walks with many ancient monuments: castles, fountains, churches… It’s always a real pleasure to wander around the cobbled streets to admire the well-preserved and restaured houses.
This private tour will offer you the quintessence of Provence and still is after many years our favorite!
